Child Health Nursing

Child Health Nursing is a core department within the College of Nursing. It helps students understand normal growth and development, as well as common Paediatric illnesses across different body systems. This course integrates Human Growth and Development with Pediatric Health Nursing and is delivered over one full-time semester through both theoretical and practical learning.

Students gain essential knowledge and skills to care for infants, children, and adolescents in a variety of clinical settings within the super speciality hospital and affiliated health centres.

To empower pediatric nurses through collaboration, continuous education, and professional development, and to advance the scope and quality of pediatric nursing practice within the Kurdistan Region, Iraq.

Department Mission

The mission of the Child Health Nursing Department is to equip third-year nursing students with foundational knowledge and skills related to child growth, development, and common pediatric health problems. The department provides students with opportunities to care for both healthy and sick children in diverse clinical environments, including:

  • Health centers for growth monitoring and immunization
  • Pediatric oncology units
  • Pediatric medical and surgical hospitals
  • Neonatal intensive care units (NICU)
  • Child rehabilitation centers

These experiences enable students to apply classroom learning directly in real clinical situations.

Learning Outcomes

  • Describe normal growth and development across all pediatric age groups.
  • Provide age-appropriate care and identify the basic needs of children.
  • Conduct a complete physical assessment of a child.
  • Perform nutritional assessments and recognize nutritional problems in children.
  • Apply the nursing process to manage common pediatric health issues.
  • Identify common medical and surgical conditions affecting children at various ages.
  • Deliver effective family health education and guidance.
  • Provide essential nursing care for newborns and premature infants.
  • Identify complications in high-risk neonates and outline basic management approaches.
  • Apply preventive measures to reduce disease in children.

Clinical Training and Practice

  • Pediatrics wards and outpatient clinics: Observation and management of sick children.
  • Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU): Care for premature and high-risk neonates.
  • Oncology pediatric wards: Monitoring children with blood and cancer disorders.
  • Child rehabilitation centers: Supporting growth and recovery.
  • Field reports and case studies to reinforce theoretical knowledge.
